The Amasong Chorus: Singing Out

Don't miss this new documentary by Jay Rosenstein that profiles Amasong: Champaign-Urbana's Premier Lesbian/Feminist Chorus and the group's founding director, Kristina Boerger. Four years in the making, this 53-minute documentary has been shown to acclaim at major lesbian and gay film festivals in Turin, Italy, in Sydney, Australia, and in San Francisco!

In Concert with the Amasong Chorus

Kristina Boerger's last concert with Amasong is Jay Rosenstein's newest production. The 30 minute film features some American spirituals, a Cajun song, and an original work by a chorus member.

Filmmaker Jay Rosenstein is a documentary producer and a UIUC journalism professor. His previous work includes Erased, which debuted at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, and In Whose Honor? American Indian Mascots in Sports, which aired nationally on PBS and was recognized as one of the most outstanding American television programs on race in 1997-98.

The documentary was recently shown at the 27th International San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Here is what festival organizers said about the film.
"Director Jay Rosenstein's all-out pleasurable documentary The Amasong Chorus: Singing Out presents Amasong Champaign Urbana's Premier Lesbian Feminist Chorus. This documentary explores issues of homophobia, community and the need for personal expression. The documentary revolves around Amasong founder Kristina Boerger, and her struggles to become a queer activist and musician, as well as her brushes with discrimination and how she rose from adversity to found such a revolutionary and inspirational yet initially rather rag tag performance troupe. Soon selling out every performance and then winning a coveted GLAMA (Gay and Lesbian American Music Award) for their recorded music. The most impressive aspect remains their beautiful voices lesbian and straight women all feminists joined as sisters, thriving in the heartland."

The Amasong Chorus: Singing Out is a co-production of Jay Rosenstein and WILL-TV, produced in association with the Independent Television Service(itvs), with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
