| Meagan Johnson Smith holds a
Masters Degree in Voice Performance and Bachelors
Degree in Performance and Music Education from
Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. She emphasized
choral conducting throughout her studies, and
led several community and school choirs of
children and adults to greater musical achievement.
While at Ithaca College, she studied conducting
with Janet Galván and Lawrence Doebler
and voice with Patrice Pastore. Ms. Smith’s
choral repertoire interests include works by
women composers, ethnic and folk music, and
new classical music. In addition to conducting,
Ms. Smith is an accomplished soprano soloist,
with a specialty in contemporary art song and
chamber music. Operatic roles include the Foreign
Woman in The Consul, Geraldine in A Hand of
Bridge, and Poppea (cover) in L’incoronazione
di Poppea. She is a private voice instructor
in the greater Champaign-Urbana area, teaching
students of diverse ages and abilities. Ms.
Smith is also studying to become a certified
teacher of the Alexander Technique, and brings
a whole-body-mind approach to her voice instruction
and choral directing. She is the music director
of Amasong, and appears regularly as a soloist
with the choir of Community United Church of
Christ in Champaign, IL.
